While Pax & I were in Albuquerque Saturday, we did a bit of shopping at Trader Joe's, which neither of us had ever done before. It was very crowded on a Saturday evening, but we liked the store itself. It makes me wish I could eat more cheese.
Anyway, we purchased a bottle of Charles Shaw Shiraz (2007). This is the wine commonly referred to as "Two-Buck Chuck." However, its price has increased to $2.99, so that is something of a misnomer. I don't suppose it really matters, though. It's decent wine that's dirt cheap. It isn't terribly complex, no, but it's highly drinkable and not completely unsophisticated.
What was the last article of clothing you purchased? Was it a necessity or an indulgence?
I'm not sure which item rang up last. If it was the undies, then they were a necessity. Not a drastic necessity, but something I went to Target with the intention of purchasing. But while I was at Target, I allowed myself a minor indulgence and bought some new pyjamas. Nothing fancy, just a purplish-blue cotton set of drawstring pants and v-neck tee.
Six-thirty this morning found me at the local Big K for the San Juan County Sheriff's Posse's "Shop with a Cop" program. Needy children, many of whom have encountered police in stressful situations, are referred by various community agencies. After breakfast and a visit with Santa, they are paired with officers who help them with their shopping. I believe the store also offers a special discount on all of the purchases. One of the nice things about this program is that it is completely volunteer, so all donations go directly to the kids' shopping fund, not some fundraising company or administrative overhead. Donation instructions are included in the link above, and I'm sure there are similar programs in other jurisdictions as well.
It was utter chaos, but I think most people were pleased with how it turned out. I was relieved once most of the kids were shopping, and all I had to do was roam the store with a camera. I posted a set of photos on flickr, but access for most of the shots is restricted to protect the privacy of participant families. Here's Beverly Meadors, who coordinates the event for the Posse, with two New Mexico State Police Officers.
When do you start your holiday shopping?
As for making actual purchases, I started today. Yes, I was out there early this morning. Though I was not insane enough to stand in the KB Toys or Radio Shack line. I snagged gifts for all 3 nieces and got a $10 DVD player to replace ours, which died recently. I picked up a few other small presents as well, but I think I will do most of the rest of the shopping online or from catalogs. And boy, howdy, do we have enough catalogs! I don't think we've ever received this many catalogs during the holiday season before. It's insane.
Here is the result of my most recent "buy me that" moment.
I believe every female is entitled to the occasional bmtm. It doesn't matter if she is perfectly capable of taking the item to the cashier and plunking down the cash (or modern equivalent) herself. There are certain pretty shiny objects that require the woman to point and issue the command "Buy me that." (And it is utterly irrelevant that her money and the buyer's money come from exactly the same place.)
This particular bmtm occured in Santa Fe's Overland store Saturday night. Really, when you think of the potential for financial ruin that an Overland bmtm poses, I believe I exercised admirable restraint.
People have been asking me what I want for Christmas. Boy, are they in luck, because I am sooooo easy to shop for! :-) In the spirit of crass commercialism, I will use this post as a repository for Stina-approved gift-giving ideas. (Pssst....if you are one of those people who find wish lists and gift registries tacky and selfish, this is your cue to exit.)
For starters, I have an amazon wishlist. If you want to see a more extensive listing of just books I'd like, you may also check out my book wish list on cliff1976's website.Just remember that I am a BookCrosser, so I am likely to find another good home for the book once I've finished it. The good news for you is that means I usually am not terribly picky about a book's condition. Used books are fine. Paperbacks are fine.
I am also not squeamish about gift cards and gift certificates. Some of my favorite places to spend money are:
Garlic & Sapphires in Downtown Farmington
Andrea Kristina's Bookstore & Kafé
